Timboon Dairy Farmer David Magilton was happy to survive Saturday night’s (February 10) Victorian Championship at Warrnambool’s Sungold Stadium-Premier Speedway on a hammer down racetrack.
In just his third meeting in a new Triple X Chassis, ‘The Ford Guy’ was ready to juice it up on a Premier Speedway of old racetrack that would leave any farmer anxious.
“I love a fast racetrack and that’s what we got, but there is always that danger of having a big wreck and with our record this season, it wouldn’t have surprised me if we tore up again, †laughed Magilton.
“All in all I was happy to survive the night, we have a new Triple X Chassis that we’re playing with and we are slowly getting back up to speed. â€
With an emphasis on time trials at the Victorian Title, Magilton set a time that had him placed right back in the field, due to the motor coughing and spluttering with no fuel.
This frustrated Magilton Racing, as Dave explains, “Our time ended up ordinary because we ran out of fuel. Sean Hebbard rolled and the officials took our out lap as our time trial lap, it should have been re-done and we should have been allowed to fill up on fuel during the red light. â€
In Magilton’s first heat race, the Passlow Ford / Fontana Automotive v26 Maxim raced to a strong second position. Magilton reported after the race that the car felt smooth and fast, but the team made a slight set-up change for the second heat, which failed to help ‘The Ford Guy’ make any major inroads.
A C-Main start saw Magilton qualify onto the back of the B-Main, where he relished the conditions to learn more about the car set-up, while keeping the car on all fours.
Watching the A-Main from the hill is always a frustrating occurrence, but the Magilton’s took great pleasure in watching friend & fellow Victorian Matthew Reed blitz the field.
“We would just like to extend our congratulations to Matty Reed on winning the Victorian Title, he is a good clean racer and we were certainly pleased for him and a Victorian to take victory, †said Dave.
The next step for ‘The Ford Guy’ is a journey to Adelaide’s Speedway City for the South Australian Sprintcar Championship on February 24. The team is excited to be heading interstate once again, which is something they enjoy doing.
“Hopefully we can be solid and competitive and have a productive night. We just want to do as much racing as possible, on varied venues because that is what we love doing and not many people have an opportunity to go Sprintcar racing every Saturday night, †beamed Magilton.
