“I messed up though, ” said the 20-year-old racing talent. “I told them to tighten the car up based on my previous races here and in the late laps it just got too tight. It was all my fault. ” Hessert had a good shot to win the race but a tight car forced him to settle for sixth.
Tom is currently 4th in the USAC National Midget Series point standings with 76 points.
In the 25-lap feature race for the Lucas Oil USAC National Sprint Car Series Hessert had oiling problems in practice and that ran over into qualifying. The MAACO Americas Body Shop No. 5H sprint car was 27th in qualifying with a 24.599 second trip around the oval.
Starting 27th Hessert had his work cut out for him and he handled it well. The talented open cockpit racer was able to charge through the pack to finish 8th gaining 19 positions in the 25-lap feature race.
“The sprint car was running strong, ” commented Hessert. “If we had had a couple more cautions instead of so many green flag laps we could have been running with the leaders. ”
On May 12th Hessert will head to Haubstadt, Indiana to race in the USAC Midget events being run at Tri State Speedway. He has run a sprint car at this track in the past but this will be a first time for him racing a midget.
On the way home from Haubstadt there is a possibility that Hessert may just make a side trip to Kokomo, Indiana to compete in a local midget race on Sunday, May 13th. That is not a firm plan right now but something that is being considered.
Other events coming up include a 100-lap USAC Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series race at Anderson, Indiana Speedway on May 23rd and a USAC National Midget Championship Series race at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis, Indiana on May 26th.
