Barry Klinedinst Motorsports and 2006 Mid-Atlantic Championship Series (MACS) Champion Jason Covert opened the 2007 MACS season as defending champion this past Memorial Day weekend at Skyline Speedway, Portsmouth Raceway Park, and Central Pennsylvania Speedway.
On Friday the team traveled to Skyline Speedway in Stewart, OH for the first MACS event of the season. Jason dug himself a hole in qualifying 47th out of the 49 cars entered in the event. The night got a little more optimistic for Covert during his heat as he was able to move up to the sixth spot. The sixth place finish put Covert into the B-Main where he would finish second transferring him to the ‘Stars and Stripes 50’
Covert would start the event in the 19th position and methodically slice and dice his way up to a very impressive 6th place finish. “We got behind the eight ball in qualifying but worked on the car all night and finally got it right for the feature, ” said a relieved Covert.
The next evening the team made their way to the Coleman Family’s Portsmouth Raceway Park for the $5,000 to win ’50 Lap Memorial Day Spectacular’. Covert qualified mid-pack but was able to get the bugs worked out during the heat race with a fourth place finish that would put him in the 15th position for the night’s main event.
Covert, just like the night before, found his “A-Game” for the feature event. Jason would put his Barry Klinedinst/ Pre-Mach, Inc. /Red Wing Shoes/Hershey’s Racing Engines/Baker Carburetion/Bam’s Auto Center/Kuppy’s Diner/Rocket Chassis Monte Carlo a third place finish behind race winner Jackie Boggs and runner-up ‘Hot’ Rod Conley.
On the final night of the three-race weekend Covert and team headed north to Central PA Speedway in Clearfield, PA for another 50-lap, $5,000 to win MACS show. Covert’s night started off much better than the two previous nights when Jason was eighth quickest after qualifying. Covert would win his heat race and finish eighth in the dash to set him up for the A-Main.
After a lap two caution, Covert would move his way into the second running position behind race leader Ricky Elliott from his eighth starting position. Covert was slowly inching his way to the fleet Elliott until disaster struck the former champion. Jason snapped an axle going into turn three and ground to a stop in turn four ruining his chances to win the 50-lap Russell Stone main event.
Covert ended the weekend sitting fourth in the 2007 MACS Championship battle.
Covert and the Barry Klinedinst Motorsports team will head to Hagerstown Speedway in Hagerstown, MD for a $10,000 to win, 50-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series event.
