Memorial Day weekend the O’Reilly NCRA Modified Series, presented by ICM/Ethanol, returns to a couple of tracks they haven’t been to in awhile.

It was July 2002 when the series last raced at Humboldt (Kan. ) Speedway. That night, Justin “Whitey” Folk won his only series feature, one of four local drivers to finish in the top 10. Three-time defending series champion John Allen finished sixth. Greg Skaggs was 10th and went on to win his first series championship.

The NCRA mods return to “The Hummer” May 25. When they do, Folk will be one of many local drivers eager to take another checker from the touring regulars.

The next night, May 26, the series goes back to Enid (Okla. ) Speedway Park. They were last there in June 2004 when Scott Green won his only NCRA modified series race. He went on to finish fourth in season points.

Brian Franz was ninth at Enid in 2004, the year he won the second of his record-setting four straight season championships. Franz has announced he will not run for another title, although he does plan to be at most of the shows this year.

It took three tries but the series finally opened their 10th season at 81 Speedway here in Park City. Originally scheduled for April 7, officials postponed the event twice because of the weather before finally getting it in May 19. Allen took the checker for the ninth time in his NCRA modified career, tying him with the late David Lahey for second on the all-time list. Franz sits atop the list with 21 career victories.

After the first show, Allen and Franz are tied for first with 300 points. Rounding out the top 10 are Greg Stephens, Jeremy Massey, Kenny Sweet, Brian Powers, Greg Burt, Travis Govern, Jason Teague and Jim Johnson.
