If defending series champion Garry Lee Maier makes it three straight championships this year, it would be a record-setting crown in the O’Reilly NCRA Sprint Car Series, presented by ICM/Ethanol.
Maier, of Cimarron, Kan., is the fourth driver to win back-to-back titles. Last year he matched the efforts of Dennis Park (1996-97), Jon Johnson (1998-99), and the late Steve King (2002-03). In the 17-year history of the series, no one has won three straight championships.
In addition, Maier won the title in 1991; he and Park sit atop the NCRA career standings with three titles each. A fourth crown would put Maier alone at the top.
