Defending Lucas Oil Indiana Sprint Week Champion Jon Stanbrough is the man to beat as the Lucas Oil USAC National Sprint Cars prepare for this week’s first five “Indiana Sprint Week” races. Stanbrough’s 2007 Indiana Sprint record has been nothing short of incredible and he will be aiming for his fourth straight ISW victory in Wednesday night’s opener at Lawrenceburg (Ind. ) Speedway.
Races will follow Thursday at Lawrenceburg, Friday and Saturday at Gas City I-69 Speedway and Sunday at Kokomo Speedway. Lucas Oil Indiana Sprint Week concludes July 19-20-21 at Boswell, Bloomington and Haubstadt.
Former Indiana Sprint Week Champions Dave Darland, Tony Elliott, Levi Jones and Cory Kruseman are also expected to be among challengers to Stanbrough in this week’s ISW action. Kruseman is the winningest driver in series history, having won 12 times, while J. J. Yeley won nine, Darland eight and Stanbrough seven. A Stanbrough victory at Lawrenceburg Wednesday would make him the first to win four straight. Jay Drake also won three straight in 2002 and Kruseman won three straight in 2000.
Darland, of Lincoln, Ind. and Bobby East of Brownsburg, Ind. scored Lucas Oil National Sprint wins in Ohio last weekend. Darland won Friday’s “Hemelgarn Racing/Super Fitness Night” 30-lapper at Toledo Speedway, leading all 30 laps in his Pace Brothers Construction/DSR Maxim/Chevy. Bryan Clauson was second ahead of East, Levi Jones and Darren Hagen. East passed Hagen on lap 13 at Mansfield Motorsports Park Saturday and race to victory in the 30-lap race in his Ford Racing/The Car Lot Beast/Ford. Hagen was second, followed by Brady Bacon, Clauson and Kevin Swindell.
Hagen led the first 12 laps at Mansfield and takes the series lead into this week’s point-rich ISW action, two points ahead of Jones in the new standings.
