The World of Outlaws return to New Egypt Speedway in New Jersey for the first time since 2003, on Sunday, May 20 for a full night of racing. The event will conclude a stretch of five races in a six-day period for the series.
Donny Schatz, a native of Fargo, North Dakota currently is tied for the lead in the World of Outlaws championship standings with Joey Saldana on the strength of four wins after the first 20 races of the season. The 1997 World of Outlaws Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year won the famed Knoxville Nationals last season, after four runner-up finishes in sprint car racing’s biggest event. He has two wins at New Egypt Speedway in World of Outlaws competition, including the series inaugural visit in 2001 as well as in 2003.
Saldana, driving for NASCAR star Kasey Kahne is locked in an epic duel with Schatz for the top spot in the championship standings. The second-generation driver has five wins on the season and also has led the most laps, and is the leader in quick time honors, with four. The native of Brownsburg, Indiana and 1996 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year, set the track record in time trials in 2001 at New Egypt Speedway, with a blistering lap of 13.828 seconds. He has two Top-10 finishes in his three starts at the half-mile.
