It was a record setting night on Saturday at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tennessee, as the World of Outlaws made their first ever appearance at the high-banked track nestled in the scenic mountains of Eastern Tennessee.
Joey Saldana began the night by blistering the track record. He turned a lap of 11.696 seconds at a speed of 123.119 miles per hour around the 32 degrees of banking on the 4/10-mile facility. Three drivers broke the existing track record which was set by a late model in a “Run What You Brung” event, as well as the sprint car track record. Even more impressive was the record crowd that gathered to see the best sprint car drivers in the world.
Track officials were proud to announce that well over 8,000 fans entered the gates on Saturday night, easily the largest crowd in the 30-plus year history of the track A large portion of those spectators took advantage of the unique tiered parking along the back straightaway in the pit area, that allowed them access to the pits, in addition to a great vantage point looking down at the track. While the fans in the grandstands also had a great view of the entire track, as the cars whistled by them each and every lap.
