Justin Lofton and the Lofton Cattle team unloaded a fast car on Saturday at Salem Speedway. Unfortunately the No. 20 Lofton Cattle Dodge was on the receiving end of short-track blunders, leaving the specially designed “cow car” heavily damaged by the checkered flag. Despite it all, it’s not too bad when a bad day ends with a 12th-place finish.
“The team and this car deserved a much better finish than this [12th],” said Lofton. “Wayne and the team put together a fantastic car. We made few changes during practice and sat at the top of the chart. Qualifying should have gone better but we were ready and had a car to run to the front as soon as the green flag dropped. Unfortunately we got caught in other people’s mistakes and suffered the consequences.”
The No. 20 Lofton Cattle Dodge sported a slightly different look this weekend at Salem Speedway. In honor of the Cattle Showdown Charity Cook-Off, the No. 20 was dressed as a Holstein cow, the same cattle that Lofton Cattle feeds. A Cook-Off featuring the Lofton Holstein and the Sheltra Brisket in a taste test was conducted for ARCA RE/MAX Series officials and team members. Votes were cast and a tie declared. All money collected was donated to Focus Motorsports Ministries, the real winner of the afternoon.
The No. 20 Lofton Cattle Dodge came to pit road early for adjustments to the car’s tight handling. While running in the top-10, contact with another car put the No. 20 into the outside wall. Lofton remained on track until the next caution at lap 97 when he brought the Dodge Charger to pit road for his team to survey the damage. The Lofton Cattle team put four fresh tires, added fuel, and worked on the battered fenders.
The No. 20 remained fast and Lofton was moving back towards the top-10 when the night’s “Big One” occurred, causing further damage to the cow. The race was red flagged at lap 140 as race officials worked to clean up the mess on the back stretch. This time Lofton lost a lap as the team worked to return him to the race. The damaged Dodge limped through the remaining laps, finishing 12th and the first car off of the lead lap.
“I’m looking forward to the season’s final short-track run at Toledo,” stated Lofton. “I think it will be…fun,” Lofton added with his usual grin.
