NASCAR driver and Corpus Christi native Bobby Labonte knows making his 500th career Cup start tonight in the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway is a big deal.
He just isn’t sure how big. After all, starting 500 career races doesn’t even put Labonte on top within his own family. His older brother, Terry, who retired last season, has made 851 career starts, including three this season as a fill-in driver. DallasNews.com
The veteran driver, who has climbed to 17th in the Nextel Cup points standings, will be making his 500th career start. He’s seeking his first win at the .75-mile oval in his 30th Cup appearance here.
“I guess I started to think about being able to make 500 starts when I saw [my brother] Terry do it,” said Labonte, the 2000 Cup champion. “He did it, and I began thinking about it, and thought that was something that was very possible that could happen.” RALPH N. PAULK, inrich.com
“I’ve been fortunate in my career, and it’s pretty special to have this opportunity this weekend. Terry has over 800 starts and Kyle (Petty Enterprises teammate Kyle Petty) has over 800 too. I’m going to try to catch them.” AutoRacingDaily
