NASCAR Nextel Cup: oston Red Sox Could Become New England's Roush Racing

When the Yankees play a make-or-break three-game series in Boston this weekend, not every Fenway favorite will taking aim at the fabled Green Monster.
Some will have their eyes on the green flag at New Hampshire Internaitonal Speedway, where NASCAR’s “postseason,” the 10-race Chase for the Nextel Cup, revs up 90 minutes north of Bunker Hill.

That’s because Roush Fenway Racing is a cross-marketing extravaganza the likes of which Major League Baseball and NASCAR have never seen. Seth Livingstone, USA TODAY

Touching off the latest round of speculation about the possible sale of the track was an interview Fox Sports recently conducted with track owner Bob Bahre, who will turn 81 this weekend, in which he said there had been some indication of interest in buying the track by Roush Fenway Racing, which is co-owned by Jack Roush and John Henry, head of the group that owns the Boston Red Sox. ROGER AMSDEN, New Hampshire Union Leader

Bahre did confirm to the Herald that he has had recent discussions with Henry and Red Sox executive Mike Dee about selling the speedway, but that nothing substantial has transpired in terms of a sale.

“I talk to people all the time about selling this place, I’m not going to live forever,” the 81-year-old Bahre said. “We were just talking. (Henry and Dee) are good people and I like them a lot.” David Exum, BostonHerald

“There’s always somebody talking,” Bahre said. “I’ve talked to Mike Dee and John Henry, and they act like someday they might want to do something. They called and said they want to talk, so we talked. I’m going on 81, so someday I want to do something with the track.” TuscaloosaNews

Members of the Fenway Sports Group have make it clear they’d like to see Roush Fenway Racing become New England’s “home team” for NASCAR.

They might have themselves a home-field advantage if preliminary discussions with Bob Bahre, chairman of New Hampshire International Speedway, bear fruit.  Seth Livingstone, USA TODAY
