And it’s further proof that NASCAR racing goes with baseball as comfortably as hotdogs, apple pie and Chevrolet.
Hall of Fame co-owner Bill Saunders announced Sunday at California Speedway that the team—which also includes Troy Aikman, Roger Staubach, Paul Whitman and Mark Griege as co-owners—has formed a partnership with Arizona Diamondbacks executives Jeff Moorad and Tom Garfinkel, in which the two baseball men will have controlling interest. Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach are no longer majority owners in Hall of Fame Racing, managing partner Bill Saunders confirmed today.
Saunders said West Coast Racing, a group headed Arizona Diamondbacks chief executive officer Jeff Moorad and chief operating officer Tom Garfinkel, will be introduced as controlling owners of the team at a news conference this afternoon from California Speedway. Hall of Fame Racing will continue its partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing and follow its switch from Chevrolet to Toyota in 2008, the teams announced Sunday.
Hall of Fame Racing officials also made official the announcement that two executives with the Arizona Diamondbacks have purchased majority interest in the NASCAR team owned by Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach, extending the partnerships-and-mergers trend in Nextel Cup this season.
Jeff Moorad, chief executive officer of the Diamondbacks, and Tom Garfinkel, the chief operating officer, are the new controlling owners of the No. 96 Chevrolet team.

What makes the Hall of Fame Racing ownership change unique is that this is the first one involving a one-car team. It shows that some find worth in even the sport’s smallest teams. That could be a good sign for the smaller teams that struggle to find enough money to compete with the sport’s largest teams every week. Talks are ongoing and other Cup teams could be making announcements on ownership changes later this season. Dustin Long, The Roanoke Times
Moorad and Garfinkel, in fact, have acquired controlling interest in ownership of HOF Racing. But they made it clear Sunday that they are looking to build on what Saunders, Aikman and Staubach began, not tear it down.
That includes continuing and expanding their relationship with Joe Gibbs Racing. And if JGR switches from Chevrolet to Toyota engines next season as expected (an official announcement could come as soon as Wednesday), that means HOF Racing will be making the switch, too. Joe Menzer, NASCAR.COM
