Tony Stewart is back where he started - not worrying about points as he races all-out week to week.
Although he is fifth in the Chase For The Nextel Cup standings, Stewart trails leader Jeff Gordon by 322 points. So when he heads to Texas Motor Speedway for this weekend’s Dickies 500, he’ll be racing the same way he did at the track when he won a year ago - as if the Chase didn’t play into his performance at all.
“As far as the championship is concerned, it’s out of our control, ” Stewart said. “So, we’re back to the mode we were in last year and that’s just trying to win races. We can’t do anything about the points now.
“That’s about the only way we have a shot, ” he said. “It doesn’t mean we’re going to quit and give up. We still have three races we can try to win here. That’s what I try to do every week is win, so that’s not going to change whether we have a reality of winning the championship or not.” REA WHITE, SceneDaily.com
“These types of things are what take up 90 percent of my time, ” Stewart said while methodically cruising around the 1.5-mile oval at TMS at 110 mph behind the wheel of a pace car. “It is well worth it for the other 10 percent — driving the race car. “
Stewart’s week begins almost immediately after the checkered flag on Sunday.
Besides his full-time job as a NASCAR driver, Stewart hosts his own radio show every week on Sirius satellite radio.
He owns Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, and has a minority ownership in Macon Speedway in Illinois and Paducah Speedway in Kentucky.
Stewart also owns Tony Stewart Racing through which he fields two USAC Sprint and Midget teams and one World of Outlaws Sprint Series team. He is about to add a second team to his World of Outlaws endeavor. RUSS GOODALL, Houston Chronicle
