Maybe the difference was in the sky. Or on the racetrack. Or maybe it was all in Casey Mears’ head. Qualifying under a fluffy cloud that maybe, just maybe, cooled the Chicagoland Speedway asphalt, Mears won the pole for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series USG Sheetrock 400 on Sunday.

“Sometime I tell the guys just to put a little darker shield on so I think it’s cloudy out,” Mears said Friday after earning the third No. 1 starting spot of his career and his first for Hendrick Motorsports.
