Maybe the difference was in the sky. Or on the racetrack. Or maybe it was all in Casey Mears’ head. Qualifying under a fluffy cloud that maybe, just maybe, cooled the Chicagoland Speedway asphalt, Mears won the pole for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series USG Sheetrock 400 on Sunday.
“Sometime I tell the guys just to put a little darker shield on so I think it’s cloudy out,” Mears said Friday after earning the third No. 1 starting spot of his career and his first for Hendrick Motorsports.

Casey Mears’ Chevrolet moved fastest while Dale Earnhardt Jr. merchandise was priced to move fast Friday at Chicagoland Speedway.

Casey Mears turned a lap of 182.556 miles per hour in his Chevrolet today, taking the pole position for Sunday’s NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet.
It marks the third career pole for Mears, who is the 29-year-old nephew of four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Rick Mears.
