How has Richmond changed over the years?
“I think this is probably the best racing that you see anywhere that we go. The place has grown and changed a lot since I started racing there but it is one of the nicest facilities that we go to, and there’s a lot of great history here with great races. We can go back to many side-by-side finishes or things that happened towards the end of the race to make them exciting. As we hear more about new tracks being built I’m always surprised that people don’t consider building more tracks like Richmond where it is a short track with great competition. ”
What should we see from the UPS Team this weekend?
“I’m really not sure. We participated in a test with the car at Memphis prior to California but we really didn’t see the kind of results we had hoped to find. It’s just extremely hard to adjust on the new cars. There’s only so much you can do and when that is combined with an extremely hard tire it’s just not a great recipe especially for a team like ours that is behind when it comes to these cars. Obviously, we’ll go and give it all we have and hope for the best. ”
Having been part of the battle to get into the Chase before, how difficult is this weekend for those teams?
“It’s a pretty difficult thing and I know that when we were in that position of trying to get into the Chase a few years ago, it was a pretty tense time. But you go and you do the best you can. You can’t control what everyone else does. You just give it your best effort. I think there’s pretty much only one team that has a chance of changing the top 12 this week and it’s certainly not impossible. I think in 2004 Jeremy Mayfield was in 15th place and went to Richmond, won the race and made it into the top 10 and the Chase. So, it can happen and it should be interesting to watch. ”
