Standing in Victory Lane, Greg Biffle peered out onto Homestead-Miami Speedway on Friday and said, ``I’ve definitely gotten a handle of this place.’‘
Biffle has indeed, entering Sunday’s Ford 400 as the defending three-time race winner. He is 15th and missed the Chase for the Cup, but might have an edge over championship contenders Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon, who are winless at Homestead. Johnson, who will start on the pole, has an 86-point lead over Gordon in the Chase. Sarah Rothschild, MiamiHerald.com
Greg Biffle has received less attention for winning the season-ending Nextel Cup race three consecutive years than any racer in memory.
That is because almost all the focus is on the Chase for the Championship winner at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
When Biffle makes his annual appearance in the track’s media center, the prevailing attitude is, “Nice win, now make way for the Chase champion.”
Last year, in the Ford 400 at Homestead, Biffle edged Martin Truex Jr. by .389 of a second. The year before, Biffle’s victory margin was only .017 over Mark Martin. In 2004, Biffle began his streak by beating Jimmie Johnson by .342.
Biffle is 15th in the season standings. During the Chase, he has one victory (at Kansas) and two runner-up finishes. His working relationship with crew chief Greg Erwin seems to be clicking. Erwin, from Hatboro, Pa., took charge the No. 16 Ford crew in early June. Bill Fleischman, Philly.com
