Infineon Raceway will celebrate 40 years of racing during the 2008 Big O Tires Racing Season, as the Sonoma Valley facility once again hosts the most diverse racing schedule in the country.
Highlighted by the 20th consecutive visit by the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the raceway will boast six major events in 2008, ranging from the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series to the IndyCar® Series. The raceway will also celebrate its 40th anniversary with a variety of exciting elements to be announced soon.
The 2008 schedule, which was unveiled today by raceway officials, will be headlined by the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, June 20-22. Juan Pablo Montoya made history at Infineon Raceway in 2007 when the former Formula One driver claimed his first NEXTEL Cup Series victory.
“It is remarkable to see how far this facility has come over 40 years, from a simple country track with a limited schedule in the late ‘60s to a fully realized spectator event facility in 2007, hosting the most diverse schedule in professional motor racing, ” said Steve Page, president and general manager of Infineon Raceway. “As we look back and savor the classic moments of the last four decades we do so with the realization that the most exciting chapters in the raceway’s history are probably yet to be written. ”
In addition to NASCAR, the upcoming season will again feature world-class drag racing, with the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series for the 21st annual FRAM Autolite NHRA Nationals (July 25-27). Three professional track records were shattered this year, including a 326.79 mph blast by Funny Car driver Mike Ashley. Infineon Raceway continues to be one of the quickest and fastest drag strips in the country, and similar results are expected for 2008.
The IndyCar® Series and the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series will also return to Infineon Raceway for the Grand Prix of Sonoma County (Aug. 22-24). Scott Dixon claimed his first Infineon Raceway victory this year.
