To set the stage, a topic that kept rearing its head, ugly or nice I’m not sure, was whether the Cup Drivers should be in the Busch/Nationwide Series at all. Drivers, Crew Chiefs and others offered up their thoughts on this dilemma. Jack Roush, a team owner and man with a vast expanse of experience under his hat was very candid with his thoughts on the whole thing. From the owner’s point of view, Mr. Roush said:
“I think if NASCAR decides it doesn’t want to have the Cup Drivers and Cup Teams and Cup Sponsors in the Nationwide, they should take it to Eldora or South Boston – take it (the Nationwide Series) someplace we don’t go.”
“ The thing that I think makes sense – other than just saying keep it the same and take the Cup Driver’s out of the picture – the thing that I think what would make sense is to have a Chase for the Nationwide Series and to give the drivers that don’t run 5 times in the Cup Series, give them 200 more points, or 100 so that the drivers with the most experience and are arguably the most able would come from behind and have a legitimate chance of still winning the Championship. But they’d have to race for it, not starting on the same level of points but coming from behind.”
