And the last shall be first. At least the last to qualify will start first in Sunday’s 3M Performance 400 at Michigan International Speedway.
Five days after letting a possible victory at Watkins Glen slip through his fingers, Jeff Gordon, the final car to qualify, bumped Greg Biffle off the pole Friday at Michigan.
“Welcome back Steve Letarte,” said Gordon, noting the return of his crew chief from a six-race suspension.

Jeff Gordon went out last, but finished first, using a late qualifying draw to claim the pole position for Sunday’s 3M Performance 400 at Michigan International Speedway with a lap of 189.026 miles per hour in his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.
“We didn’t get the best lap, but I thought we really communicated well on adjustments that we needed and obviously they worked very well for qualifying,” said Gordon.

Days after losing the Watkins Glen race because he spun out in the lead, Gordon won the pole for this weekend’s 3M Perforance 400 at Michigan International Speedway.
Gordon admits he has extra motivation after last week’s spin.
“I take a lot of pride in what I do out there and I want to do it the best I possibly can every single time I’m out there,” he said. “I don’t like to make mistakes. When I make a mistake, I take it personally to heart. When the team puts me in position to win, we need to win.

That little voice in Jeff Gordon’s head must have sounded a whole lot like Nancy Kerrigan whenever he sat down and had a good heart-to-heart talk with himself this past week.
“I said it a thousand times Sunday, maybe 500 more times on Monday and a couple hundred times on Tuesday,” said the four-time Cup champion and current point leader. “That was a tough one to get over, and I’m usually pretty good at letting things roll off my back and getting past it.
Gordon found another method of therapy Friday afternoon when he won the pole for Sunday’s 3M Performance 400 at Michigan International Speedway, the fifth MIS pole of his career.

Jeff Gordon came to Michigan International Raceway with a sizable lead in the Nextel Cup points race and a secure spot in the Chase for the Cup playoff that could lead to his fifth title in NASCAR’s top series.
But Gordon also arrived intent on making up for a mistake that cost him a victory last week.
He took the first step toward redemption Friday by winning the pole position for the 3M Performance 400 on Sunday. It’s the fifth time he has won the first starting spot on the two-mile oval here, where he has won the race twice.
