Kurt Busch led once for 10 laps in his Miller Lite Dodge Avenger and Ryan Newman appeared headed for a solid run in his Alltel Dodge Avenger in Sunday’s Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway before misfortune befell both drivers in the inaugural race for NASCAR’s Car of Tomorrow.
The problems led to a 29th-place finish for Busch and a 39th for Newman. Busch maintained the 20th position in the point standings, but Newman dropped five positions to 23rd.
Newman was the first Penske driver to encounter problems in the scheduled 500-lap race on the high-banked, half-mile track. On lap 96, Newman lost two laps when he was forced to pit with a flat left-rear tire. That dropped him to 40th.
