NASCAR Nextel Cup: Ricky Rudd Back From Injury Confident To Race At Charlotte This Weekend Ricky Rudd

Ricky Rudd, out of action since Labor Day with an injured shoulder, hopes to return to action next Saturday night at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

“If you had to ask me today, I would say Charlotte (will be my first race back in the car), “ Rudd said Friday in the garage here at Talladega. “It’s not a hundred-percent done deal. The doctors have to release me, but I think they’ve been happy with the progress. “

Rudd was injured at California Speedway on Sept. 2 during his 900th career Cup start. On lap 181, Rudd was swept into a five-car crash that injured his shoulder and took him out of Robert Yates’ No. 88 Ford for a while. It was ironic that one of the worst injuries of his career came shortly after he announced his upcoming retirement. Dan Beaver, Sports

“My shoulder still is not at 100 per cent yet, “ said Rudd, who will retire at the end of the season. “But we’re going to have to see how it handles being in the car for practice. “

Rudd separated his left shoulder in a Sept. 2 wreck at California Speedway. It was the first time the 50-year-old Rudd, who recently started his 900th race, missed a race because of injury.

He sat out last year - racing once as an injury substitution for Tony Stewart - and returned to a full schedule this season.

Rudd, who was replaced by brothers Kenny and Mike Wallace, said he isn’t certain he’s ready to run the full 500 miles Saturday night. CanadianPress
