Ambrose was scheduled to compete in the race in a second Robby Gordon Motorsports Ford, an olive branch served up by the feisty Gordon as penance for dumping the Aussie at the end of last week’s Busch race in Montreal, an act that got Gordon parked the next day in Pocono and triggered a mini-media frenzy. “I’m tired of talking about it,” laughed Ambrose, who was nearly hoarse after a weeklong series of interviews about how the two had patched things up.But only Gordon, not Ambrose, will race Sunday at Watkins Glen.

Robby Gordon has pledged that Ambrose will have the exact same equipment as the owner of Robby Gordon Motorsports, part of a peace offering for spinning Ambrose out last week at Montreal.
It’s an exciting time for both Ambrose and the race fans, as well as NASCAR itself. Ambrose is so likable – and unique, thanks to his Australian accent – that NASCAR could easily market him should he ever make it to a full-time Cup ride.

It’s a great opportunity missed, not just for Marcos, but for road racing and the sport in general. The fact that they teamed up is a great human interest story. Robby took his wrong — costing Marcos a chance to win the race — and tried to make it right. Kudos to Robby for making an attempt to make it up to Marcos. It was the right thing to do. While the media was in an uproar about Robby’s behavior and NASCAR was out back figuring out exactly how to deal with the unruly challenge child, Robby was doing some quick thinking on the side. By the end of the weekend, Robby had come up with an idea that would both get him out of the knee deep stuff he was in and maybe make a few points with the fans that he had ticked off.
Robby took Marcos aside and offered him a chance to drive in his first Cup race, here, at Watkins Glen. Amy Hair, Cup Scene Daily

A week after spinning each other out in a bizarre finish to the first NASCAR Busch Series race in Montreal, Robby Gordon and Marcos Ambrose are going from protagonists to teammates.
At the suggestion of an e-mail from a fan, Robby Gordon Motorsports is fielding cars for Gordon and Ambrose in Sunday’s Nextel Cup race at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.

Robby Gordon’s behavior in the Busch race at Montreal was perhaps the worst example of sportsmanship I have ever seen. Why NASCAR did not red flag the race and remove him from the track when he refused to line up in his proper position is a mystery. The class that Marcos Ambrose showed in his post race interview was especially refreshing given the circumstances. Having been cheated out of his first win by a classless and childish act of a petulant bully, Ambrose responded as the Champion he is.

Robby Gordon caught a red-eye back to Florida, drove straight to Sebring and clocked laps faster than the previous day.
Dan Davis, director of Ford Racing Technology, chuckled when a colleague recently recounted the story of how Gordon, then 19, earned the first major-league ride of a career often as brilliant as it has been bullheaded. “He’s a dog with a bone, and he’ll wrestle that bone and bury it and dig it back up and bury it again,” said Davis, who oversees Ford’s Nextel Cup Series program. “Robby doesn’t back down from anything.”

Robby Gordon: “Robby Gordon Motorsports is proud to announce Marcos Ambrose as my team-mate.
“I’ve been looking for a team-mate in Nextel Cup for a while and I’m looking forward to getting together. We were actually planning on getting together sometime Wednesday anyway. Auto Racing Daily

NASCAR needs Robby Gordon. It also needs Gordon to throttle down a bit. That’s why the sanctioning body announced Tuesday that it was fining Gordon $35,000 and putting him on probation for the rest of 2007. Even more important than the penalty, however, was an additional stipulation, sort of a Dean Wormer, double-secret probation straight out of the movie Animal House

On a restart with four laps to go Robby Gordon muscled his way by Marcos Ambrose. Shortly thereafter, another caution occurred, ironically caused by eventual declared race winner Kevin Harvick. After the yellow flag was clearly seen waving on National TV, Ambrose made contact with Robby Gordon, resulting in Gordon waiting on the sidelines while the field passed.

Robbie Gordon, who basically flipped out in Canada during the Busch series race by spinning the guy who was going to win, is making it up to Marcos Ambros by giving him his first shot at Nextel Cup competition.
Gordon actually admits that he got so mad at NASCAR’s ruling to put him back in the pack, he decided, “If I wasn’t going to win, he wasn’t going to win.” So he wrecked Ambrose’s chance at his first NASCAR victory, then Gordon did mock victory donuts after Kevin Harvick’s win. Crazy or just hyper competitive? Doug Guthrie, TheDetroitNews

Marcos Ambrose was cheated out of a chance to win his first NASCAR race by Robby Gordon. His disappointment was lifted, though, when he was given an opportunity to race the first Nextel Cup event of his career. His benefactor? None other than Gordon himself.
Feeling guilty because he intentionally wrecked Ambrose in the closing laps of the Busch Series race in Montreal, Gordon offered Ambrose a car to race this weekend on the road course at Watkins Glen, N.Y. JENNA FRYER, AP.org

“Well, they say that America is the land of opportunity and I guess this is proof of that, ” said Ambrose.
“A bit of old outback Australian culture involved playing a game of Australian football, having a fight and then heading to the pub together for a beer – I guess this is a bit like that.
“This is part apology and part compliment on Robby’s behalf. I believe we can have a solid run this weekend and give Ford, Camping World and the rest of Robby Gordon Motorsports’ sponsors a good return on their investment. Auto Racing Daily
The driver that cost Marcos Ambrose his first Busch Series victory is giving him his first Nextel Cup ride.
Robby Gordon, who spun out the Australian-born driver on a green-white checkered finish last Saturday in Montreal, will field a second car for Ambrose at Sunday’s road course race in Watkins Glenn, N.Y.
“It is a crazy situation,” Ambrose said on Tuesday. “Racing is a funny business. I knew after the weekend more good than bad would come out of it regardless of the result. Here’s an example of it.” David Newton, ESPN.com

Robby Gordon will field a car for Australian Marcos Ambrose in this weekend’s Nextel Cup race at Watkins Glen International, what will be Ambrose’s series debut. Seems Gordon is feeling remorseful after his late-race temper tantrum in Montreal cost Ambrose a shot at his first career Busch Series victory.

Ambrose will drive the Robby Gordon Motorsports No. 77 Camping World sponsored Ford Fusion, which will also carry sponsorship from Kingsford Charcoal, Ambrose’s Busch Series sponsor.
The release announcing the deal described it as a “peace offering” from Gordon to Ambrose. Ambrose had been expected to attempt to qualify for the event in a Wood Brothers/JTG Racing entry, the team which he races for in the Busch Series, but those plans had been scrapped recently. Holding his tongue has paid off in a big way for Australian motor racing star Marcos Ambrose.
Ambrose has been given a debut drive in the Nextel Cup, NASCAR’s elite competition, by Robby Gordon, the same American driver who cost him a maiden victory with an act of petulance at the weekend.
The move, which makes them temporary team-mates, comes after a peace-making phone call following one of the most controversial incidents in NASCAR’s recent history. SydneyMorning Herald
