NASCAR Nextel Cup: Sam Hornish Jr. Will Attempt To Make His Nextel Cup Series Debut At Atlanta Motor Speedway CIA Stock

Sam Hornish Jr., driver of the No 06 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger, will attempt to make his NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series debut at a familiar Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday.

-- Hornish recorded his best Busch Series start, fifth, and finish, 15th, at the 1.54-mile oval earlier this season.

-- In 2006, Hornish competed in the AMS IROC Series event. He started seventh and finished ninth in that race.

-- Hornish’s career best Atlanta finish was in the 2001 IRL event, when he started sixth and finished fourth.

-- Hornish has attempted to qualify for five Cup Series events this season - New Hampshire, Dover, Talladega, Charlotte and Martinsville.

-- Although Hornish’s 2008 plans have not been determined, the former Indianapolis 500 champion will attempt to qualify for three of the four remaining 2007 events in the No. 06 Mobil 1 Dodge with Roy McCauley leading the charge.

-- This weekend’s primary car is PRS-073. It was last driven by Kurt Busch at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in May in the All-Star race when he started third and finished ninth. The backup car ‘ PRS-051—dates back to 2002 and was originally driven by Rusty Wallace.

Hornish’s Take On Atlanta: ‘I feel good about going to Atlanta. It’s the first track that I’ve actually been to before. So, hopefully, that’ll work out for us.

We were close last week. We made it in on time, but we were bumped out by a championship provisional. It’s still a learning process, but I’m the most confident I’ve been all year going into this weekend.’

McCauley’s Take On Atlanta: ‘I think Sam¿s got a good shot to do well this weekend. In the spring Busch race, he was two laps down and got it back to finish 15th, the highest non-Cup driver to finish on the lead lap. His experience on the track will definitely help.

Night-time qualifying is always exciting, speed picks up the later it gets. We’ve got Kurt’s car from this year’s All-Star race that he did well in.
