Sterling Marlin finished 27th in Saturday night’s Nextel Cup event at Phoenix International Raceway.
Marlin started the Subway Fresh Fit 500 from the 37th spot and struggled with the handling of his Waste Management Chevrolet throughout the event. But late in the race, the veteran driver looked to be closing in on a top-20 finish before a caution came out just after the team made a green-flag pit stop.
Marlin had just returned to the one-mile oval following that stop when the yellow flag waved for a two-car accident on Lap 284 of 312. Following the caution period, the Ginn Racing driver restarted the race in the 27th position and was unable to gain any positions in the closing minutes.
