Fifth For Troy On Day One
Mar 02, 2007
Troy finished fifth fastest on the first day of qualifying at Phillip Island after using both sessions trying to find a good set-up for raceday. There were no ‘dramas’ or ‘incidents’ today as Troy and his Yamaha Motor Italian mechanics just carried out the various jobs necessary to find the right bike set-up.
Troy himself knows that the first day of a Superbike World Championship event is all about finding a good bike set-up, and not chasing fast laps.
James Toseland (Honda) posted the fastest lap of the day, with a time of 1:32.040, well inside the lap record set by Troy Bayliss (Ducati) last season. Second quickest today is Bayliss, with Fonsi Nieto (Kawasaki) third and Lorenzo Lanzi (Ducati) fourth.
TROY - 5th, 1: 32.900 As usual we’ve spent the first day trying different things and looking for a good set-up on the bike for raceday. Over the years, I’ve learnt that chasing a quick time on day one is not as important as getting a good bike set-up. As long as I qualify for Superpole, that’s the only thing that matters at this stage. The bike is different to when we tested here, so we’ve had to make some adjustments and try out a few things to get it working as we want. But, we know which direction to go and tomorrow should just be a matter of making the right adjustments. I think that the track is in pretty good condition and I’m feeling very comfortable on the bike, so I’m looking forward to the races on Sunday and getting a couple of podiums in front of all the Aussie fans who have come to see me.
