Hour Ten of today’s 2008 WPS Bathurst 12 Hour concluded in terrifying style when the Mazda 3 MPS driven by Sydney’s Len Cave flipped an amazing ten times through The Chase, with Cave amazingly escaping any serious injury.
57 year old Sydney-sider Cave was further down in the pack when he was approaching the chase nine hours and 42 minutes in and dropped a wheel, sliding sideways into the sand trap at approximately 250 kilometres per hour. Digging into the sand trap, the blue Thrifty #27 Mazda then rolled approximately ten times with a number being clean in the air – with the impact so severe the engine, front suspension and gear box were torn clear during the crash, with the car amazingly coming to rest on its roof on the exit of The Chase.
Amazingly, Cave was able to remove himself from the car, and is currently being assisted by medical personnel on site of the crash and will soon be escorted to the medical centre with full precautions for a thorough check-over, however he appears to have escaped serious injury.
