A solid run in the opening race of the V8 Supercars at Winton has earned IRWIN Racing’s Alan Gurr his first championship points of the season.
The 15th place finish was the highlight of the weekend for Gurr, who made the most an excellent pit strategy in wet conditions.
The round was won by Jamie Whincup (Team Vodafone) who gave Ford its first win of the year.
The IRWIN Racing team also made a pit stop gamble in the weekend’s second race, but it didn’t bring the desired result. His race was made even tougher after being turned around by Dean Canto to finish 24th.
The final race was relatively uneventful for the entire field with Gurr taking 25th place.
“Great strategy in the opening race got us the result, ” said Gurr.
“In this sport you can gamble and it pays off. It can also not fall your way like we found in race #2. We got shuffled back and felt like a pinball at some stages.
“In saying all that we are satisfied to get some points. We can continue to build from here.
“It was a very tough weekend to drive in the greasy conditions. I was quite pleased with how I drove and kept the mistakes to a minimum.
“We made some changes to the car this weekend and hopefully we can have a dry track at Eastern Creek to show what that can bring. “
Lead Engineer Greg Foletta took many positives from the weekend.
“We got points and finished on the lead-lap in every race, ” said Foletta.
“The improvements made to Alan’s car coming into this weekend have improved the package. We can now move forward by directly comparing it to our teammate Jason Bright.
“It can’t be underestimated how hard it is to finish in the top-15 in a field of 31 very competitive cars in this series. “
The Queen’s Birthday weekend of the V8 Supercar Championship series at Sydney’s Eastern Creek will be run on June 9-11.
