Surfers Paradise is well known for its beaches, but that won’t be the focus of attention for the IRWIN Racing team on the 18-21 October.
The V8 Supercar Championship Series makes its annual appearance on the streets of the Gold Coast as part of the Indy Carnival.
It’s one of the toughest events on man and machine, but IRWIN Racing’s Alan Gurr is confident of a strong performance after showing strong pace at Bathurst.
“At Bathurst we showed very good pace, but we were hampered by a broken clutch, ” said Gurr.
“The car was able to set very competitive times at Bathurst and our aim is to show that true pace at Indy.
“Being a local I know the area very well, plus I have had plenty of experience racing on the circuit in both V8s and other categories.
“The important thing is to qualify well, but you also have to be on the ball in the races as any mistake ends up against a very solid concrete wall.
“It’s usually very warm, but I pride myself on my fitness and that’s an important element over three very tough races. “
IRWIN Racine lead engineer Greg Foletta is looking forward to showing improved pace at Indy.
“We made some gains over the Bathurst weekend and we feel that Indy will show that, ” said Foletta.
“Although these races are not 1000km in length, the car takes just as big a pounding with the heavy braking and acceleration on the street track.
“While others had brake issues at Bathurst, it was never a concern for us and we feel that it’s one of our strengths heading into Indy. “
The IRWIN Racing Falcon hits the track on Friday for two 50-minute practice sessions, followed by the elimination-styled qualifying.
Saturday has just the one 27-lap race, with Sunday featuring two more 27-lap races.
