A strong showing by Jack Perkins during Friday’s practice sessions has carried over into the first race of the weekend on the Gold Coast, the #11 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore finishing in a strong 16th.
On the highly demanding Gold Coast circuit which features a day-to-day road track surrounded by towering cement barricades and metal safety fencing, Perkins highlighted once again his growing confidence in the Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore.
Determined to stay out of trouble on a track that is notorious for claiming even the most experienced V8 Supercar drivers, Perkins set solid pace during the two Friday practice sessions and start the opening race in 22nd position on the grid.
The 27-lap opening race, the first of three for the weekend, proved a daunting task with each and every driver up and down pit lane with a story to tell, and while Perkins stayed out of trouble and held off former multiple V8 Champion Mark Skaife to earn 16th position by the chequered flag it wasn’t so for team mate Shane Price.
Starting the race just two rows behind Perkins, Price began well, moving ahead during the early laps to set a comfortable pace. But on lap 19 a heavy impact with a barricade ended his race, the #7 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore sustaining substantial panel damage down the left hand side of the car.
The team quickly had the stricken Holden back into the pit garage and overnight work will have Price lining up once again for Race Two on Sunday morning.
The action continues on Sunday with two further 27-lap races.
