Fujitsu Racing’s Jason Bright will contest this afternoon’s qualifying session for the Supercheap Auto 1000 despite a heavy hit during this morning’s practice session.
After setting the ninth fastest time for the session, Bright went wide at Caterpillar Corner and hit the tyre bundle, just in front of the concrete wall.
“I just went in a little hot and couldn’t steer into the corner, ” said Bright.
“There was so much debris off-line that it was like driving on gravel and it just sucked me into the wall.
“Fortunately they have a tyre bundle just in front of the wall and that absorbed a lot of the impact.
“The car drove pretty well back to the pits. We have had to change the front bumper, guards, headlights, passenger side door and the windscreen. Importantly there was no damage to the engine and all the steering and suspension components were all straight.
“The guys have a bit of work to do but we’ll be OK for qualifying this afternoon. I did something similar in 1998 before the race and we went on to win that year.
“Caterpillar is one of our major sponsors, but it wasn’t the type of coverage we were looking for. Fujitsu also has major signage at the track, but we’ll be aiming to steer clear of a repeat performance at that corner! ”
