Fujitsu Racing’s Jason Bright has endured an up and down weekend to come away 13th overall and grab some valuable championship points at the fifth round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series at Sydney’s Eastern Creek.
The highlight of the weekend was the opening race where Bright took eighth place. This was after he qualified in seventh.
Bright was set to move up the order in race #2, but he had to make an unscheduled pit stop to repair a damaged rear bumper. He was forced to fight back from 25th to 16th, but a collision with fellow Ford driver John Bowe earned the Fujitsu Racing driver a penalty and he was relegated to 20th.
In the final race Bright took 15th place and the final finishing points.
“We again showed that we have pretty good pace, ” said Bright.
“What we now need is to knock-off three consistent races and I’m sure we can look at a top-five finish.
“If they paid points for cars that you pass, I reckon we’d be looking very good.
“The second race was very frustrating. We got hit in the rear and we had to make the extra stop. I was pretty determined to grab some points in that race, and the incident with John Bowe was totally my fault.
“I’m looking forward to the next round in Darwin. I’m confident that we will be on the pace, we just need to qualify a little further up and avoid any carnage. “
Chief Engineer Geoff Slater summed up a frustrating weekend.
“Everything was going to plan until race #2 this morning, ” said Slater.
“When you get in a position where you have to fight your way back, things are going to go against you.
“However, that’s racing. It’s not all about having a fast car; you have to make good strategic calls and have quick pit stops. Those are things you can control. Then add-in other elements like competitors running into you and you get an idea of how things can work against you.
“On the positive side we are proving ourselves in qualifying and the first race. We can improve our qualifying pace and then round-out races #2 and #3. “
The Fujitsu Racing crew has just a handful of days to prepare for the next round in Darwin. The Skycity Triple Crown will be run on 22-24 June at Hidden Valley Raceway.
