Paul Kemal’s sensational Aussie Racing Cars Race 2 victory at Gold Coast’s Indy Street Circuit has propelled him into a series-winning position with only one race remaining after overcoming a six way fight at the front.
The defending champion had a slow start, dropping back to second place while V8 Supercar driver Paul Morris took the lead. Kemal regained the lead soon after and for the remaining four laps was involved in a six-way tussle involving Nick Lowe, Ben McCashney, James Ward, Morris and Brad Lowe for the lead.
It was a last lap blinder from Kemal that saw him break the current lap record, pulling away to cement his second win for the meeting with Morris close behind and Nick Lowe in third.
“That was a fantastic race, at one stage I was pushed back as far as fourth when a concertina happened, ” Kemal said.
“On the final lap Morris got past me, but I was able to outbreak him at the next section of corners and hold on for the win which puts me in a good position for the Series. ”
BOC driver Nick Lowe impressed with third on his first visit to the track. He worked well with Brad Lowe to bridge the gap to the front runners and from there made steady inroads to third.
“I cannot believe how much fun this circuit is to race on, it is the best I have been to, ” Nick said.
“The race itself was interesting as anyone of the top six could win and it was a matter of being in the right place at the right time. ”
Sheridan Phillips raced superbly to post a top 5 result after a hard season in the Dingo Racing Commodore and will start the all important final in a prominent grid slot that will allow him to race with the front runners.
Adam Gowans continues his strong run in the ‘pocket rockets’ with another top 10 finish while also setting the fifth fastest lap time in his first outing at the demanding street circuit.
Masters Cup race glory went to Tom Vececivic who overcame mechanical dramas yesterday when he blew two gears. Shane Wolki picked up an important second place while Steve MacGregor stormed from the back of the grid after running on three cylinders in Race 1 to score third.
“We were up late working on the car so to come away with the win is a great result, ” Vececivic said.
“This is only my third round for this year and I am aiming to win my first Masters Cup round which means I have to finish in front of Wolki in the final tomorrow. ”
Mark Duckworth and birthday boy Darren Chamberlin filled the top 5 while debutants Dylan and David Thomas finished seventh and ninth respectively with Dennis O’Sullivan splitting the pair in eighth, driving the car Travis Edwards drove in Race 1.
