Defending champion Rick Kelly’s unbroken run of round podium finishes this season continued at Eastern Creek when he was elevated to third place following the exclusion of rival Jamie Whincup by stewards from the Race 3 results for illegal rear brake rotors.
Originally classified fourth for the round after coming fifth in Race 3, Kelly gained two extra points from the Race 3 fourth placing to earn his fifth podium on the trot.
Team-mate Garth Tander also moved up a slot in Race 3, from sixth to fifth, to bring an extra point and a little extra joy from a disappointing weekend that went wrong in Race 2 when his clutch failed on the start line.
And instead of leading Whincup by 30 points after the round, the revised championship points score has second-place Tander (251 points) leading both Whincup and Todd Kelly (205) by 46 points.
Championship Rick Kelly is now on 276 points, 25 clear of Tander.
Although Rick Kelly ended up on 52 points for the round at Eastern Creek – the same as brother Todd – Todd was awarded second place behind round winner Mark Skaife due to Race 3 finishing order.
Tander remained in eighth place for the round, on 28 points.
Both Tander and Kelly are looking forward the next two rounds at Hidden Valley and Queensland Raceway where they have enjoyed success in recent years.
