Strategy and discipline are the keys to taking out this year’s V8 Supercar Championship according to Tasman Motorsport Managing Director Jeff Grech.
The championship will be decided at this weekend’s Dunlop Grand Finale at Phillip Island, with Toll HSV Dealer Team’s Garth Tander and Rick Kelly involved in a four way tussle with Ford drivers, Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes.
While his own drivers, Greg Murphy and Jason Richards, are not involved in the title fight, Grech speaks with authority having guided Lowndes and Mark Skaife to six championships in seven years while at the helm of the Holden Racing Team.
“They’re playing for sheep stations; everything’s on the line and people do strange things under pressure, ” said Grech.
“In this situation, you have adjust your outlook each day, take each session as it comes and mix it up if required. You’ve got to be fast, but also proceed with some caution.
“The title will be decided not only by who has the best strategy, but also the most discipline. Without discipline, it’ll be very easy to throw it all away. ”
Grech said picking a winner is difficult, the top four separated by just 48 points.
“They’ve all got an equal chance, but if I had to lean one way it’d be towards Tander’s – he’s been fast all year and won more races than anyone else, but it won’t be easy. ”
