Todd Kelly has put his #7 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore in the top five in qualifying for the Sprint Gas Manufacturer’s Challenge at the Formula 1 ING Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne today.

Brother and team-mate Rick Kelly was 12th fastest in this #15 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore, making it a strong day for the pair around the 5.303-kilometre circuit. But both agree that there is more to come.

Todd Kelly will be out again tomorrow afternoon for the V8 Supercars Top 10 Shootout to determine his final grid position for the first of this weekend’s three races.

Earlier in the day both Jack Daniel’s Racing Commodores were in the top 10 on the timesheets in practice, with Todd and Rick Kelly seventh and 10th fastest respectively.

Craig Lowndes was fastest in qualifying today at the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit ahead of Fabian Coulthard and Jason Richards.

The Top 10 Shootout and Race 1 will be held tomorrow – see below for race schedule and telecast times.

Todd Kelly - #7 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore

“We have made a lot of progress today, especially from Clipsal, and we have learnt a hell of a lot more about the car,” said Todd Kelly.

“Unfortunately we burnt up every set of tyres to get into the top 10 due to that red flag that came out in qualifying, so it’s going to be a bit difficult because I’m sure a lot of the other guys will have a brand new set of tyres.

“We also want to make a few more changes to the car and go probably a little bit further with those changes than we normally would just to learn more about it. We’ll see how it goes.”

Rick Kelly - #15 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore

“Everyone is saying it’s a fantastic effort for our second shot on the track,” said Rick Kelly.

“But as a team we are disappointed because we know that the car is capable of being further up the grid.”

David Swenson - Race Engineer, #15 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore

“It’s slightly disappointing being the sixth Holden,” said Swenson.

“Based on the initial times in qualifying we were expecting to be a lot higher up than that.

“We improved the car from practice but there were a few little things with set-up that we didn’t quite get on top of.”
