Star Toll Holden Racing Team driver Garth Tander today renewed his driving contract with the factory team for a further two years.
The news comes off the back of a tremendous week for the Toll Holden Racing Team, which included;
* An address by Holden Chairman and Managing Director Mark Reuss and his soon to be successor Alan Batey last Friday confirming a renewal of the long term sponsorship contract for HRT and,
* Dominant performances by drivers Will Davison and Garth Tander last weekend at Sandown including two pole positions and two race wins – HRT’s first ‘1-2’ race result since Hidden Valley in 2005 and ten years since the team recorded a similar result at this historic track.
Garth Tander said he had set his sights firmly on the 2009 Driver and Team’s Championship.
“I am absolutely delighted to have re-signed with HRT for another two years,” Tander said.
“This caps off a great week for the Toll Holden Racing Team and puts us in a strong position to push hard for this year’s Championship and future titles,” he said.
HRT’s Will Davison and Garth Tander currently sit second and third in the V8 Supercar Championship at the half-way mark of the season.
The CEO of Walkinshaw Racing Craig Wilson said today’s announcement was great news for the team, sponsors and legion of HRT fans around the country.
“Under Walkinshaw Racing’s stewardship we have put together an excellent management team, strong driver line-up and second to none team of engineers, mechanics and support staff to run the Toll Holden Racing Team,” Wilson said.
“Furthermore we have fantastic corporate support, with many of our sponsors being a part of the team for more than ten years.”
“By re-signing Garth to a new contract we have further guaranteed the long term stability and future prospects for the team, but remain singularly focused on this year’s Driver and Teams’ Championships.”
In the five years since moving to Walkinshaw Racing Tander has consistently found himself at the front of the pack, achieving numerous pole positions, race and round victories, as well as the 2007 Driver Championship, 2006 and 2007 Team Championships.
This makes Tander the most successful V8 Supercar driver in the five years he has raced at Clayton.
Last season, Tander and some of the team’s key winning personnel moved to the Toll Holden Racing Team. Over the 2008 season he recorded four round victories, four podiums and was placed third overall – having led the Championship going into Bathurst.
This year Will Davison joined Tander at HRT.
At the half-way mark of the season Tander has secured two race wins and four podiums, while Davison has achieved six podiums and one race win.
The next event of the Series is at Queensland Raceway in a fortnight.
