WEST Cars Australia works driver Tom Drewer has won the Thundersports category at Round 4 of the Australian Motor Racing Series held at the Queensland Raceway this week end (June 16-17).
With four WEST cars in the field and the 1.6 litre Chiron of Steve Morcom and the 1.2 litre Prosport Mulsanne of Grant Watson pitted against the 1 litre WEST cars it was a torrid battle throughout the week end, but in the end Drewer came out on top with the round win, and the fastest time around Queensland Raceway for the WEST chassis with a time of 1 minute 12.563 seconds.
“I wasn’t driving my regular chassis, with that car being used by Ash Samardi for the week end, so I stepped in and drove one of our customer cars owned by Bruce Burchett and I think the performance shows that all the cars WEST sells are identical and capable of doing the times”, Drewer said after the meeting.
The WEST cars dominated the event not only by Drewer taking the round win, but with fellow WEST drivers Mark Buik and Graeme Cook taking second and third.
Drewer has dominated in the Thundersports category in the WEST since first competing in the car last year and currently holds lap records at Adelaide International Raceway, Calder, Winton, and Wakefield Park.
He also recently set a lap record at Adelaide’s Mallala circuit.
The WEST WR1000 is the latest example of the marque and is a 260+ kph state of the art sports racing car that weighs in at a mere 375 kilos with 174 horsepower at the rear wheels delivered via a Kawasaki 1000cc engine.
WEST are official constructors to the IMSA Lites Series and produce the most successful D Class Sports Prototype in the USA.
