Michael Trimble is aiming to use this weekend’s fifth round of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series at Victoria’s Winton Motor Raceway

Global Jet V8 Supercar driver Michael Trimble is aiming to use this weekend’s fifth round of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series at Victoria’s Winton Motor Raceway to spring board him back up the championship standings.

Trimble, who celebrates his 24th birthday on Sunday, enjoyed a stellar opening three rounds to the highly competitive series to be placed second in the standings before an indifferent round at Queensland Raceway has him placed in fifth spot with three rounds remaining.

“I came into this year with the aim of finishing inside the top five and as the highest placed rookie in the standings,” said Trimble.

“Everything was pretty much on track to achieve these goals before a couple of mishaps at Sandown and Queensland Raceway, now it’s time to put them behind me and climb back up the order in the championship standings.”

The tight 3.0km Winton circuit is one Trimble knows intimately. It is the home track of the Independent Race Cars outfit, which prepares the #64 Global Jet Commodore, and as such is the venue where he has tested twice already this year.

“Winton was my test track when I was racing a Formula Ford and is once again my test track now that I’m in a V8, it’s a track which is quite tight and technical,” said Trimble.

“I’ve raced there in both Formula Ford and the Carrera Cup – where I finished inside the top five in two races last year – so I know my way around there.”

“Qualifying well is going to be vital because if you’re caught back in the pack you’re become vulnerable of being caught up in someone else’s accident or mistake.”

Trimble enters this weekend fifth in the championship standings on 754 points, only 80 points behind fellow rookie David Reynolds in second place. Experienced V8 Supercar drivers, Steve Owen and Dean Canto - who have 106 starts in the ‘main game’ between them - are currently first and third respectively.
