Watch: V8 Supercar Narrowly Avoids One of Worst Racing Accidents Ever

McConville’s Team BOC Holden and the Commodore of part-time driver Steve Owen clashed at high-speed on lap 21 near the island circuit’s high speed turn one while racing side-by-side in the enduro.

The collision rocked McConville’s car off all four wheels before he speared across the track backwards, through grass and a gravel pit which barely slowed the car.

He swept across part of the track close to turn three and was narrowly missed by the Holden of David Besnard, who was stunned to see the obstacle hurtling across the track in front of him.

McConville’s broken car finally came to a rest and he was unhurt, but furious at what he called the “stupid” action of Owen, claiming he was engaging in “amateurish” tactics with almost 90 laps remaining. Sydney Morning Herald

‘’It ruined our race,’’ a disgusted McConville said.

‘’He (Owen) kept blocking the inside line, which obviously when you’re in the main game you understand you can’t do.

‘’I had a run at the inside and he just turned and clipped my wheel at 280km/h, so sorry to the boys because we had a fast car, but that’s what happens with once-a-year racers, I suppose.’’ Auto Racing Daily

Owen had his own view of the dramatic incident, saying McConville’s comments were ‘’standard for Cam’’ and called him a whinger.

Steve Richards, who finished in third place with Ford Performance Racing partner Mark Winterbottom, was pleased with the team’s result, but shocked at the sight of McConville’s car careering across the track.

‘’For me it was quite interesting, there were a few guys spearing off (and) I saw Cameron launching on to the track just in front of myself and (Garry Rogers Motorsport driver) Lee Holdsworth.’’

‘’It is heart-wrenching because the team put a big effort in here this weekend,’’ he said. ‘’Jamie got a great start, the car ran smooth, our economy was good, so that side of it is very positive for the team and the outlook.’’ The Age
