He takes care of them with the same zeal he shows for his hardware and software business. And like his company’s sales, their numbers too have grown over the years necessitating a larger area for their upkeep. N Jehangir, managing director of the Rs 800-crore NeST Group, takes pains to locate, buy and maintain a collection of vintage cars. But he enjoys the experience.
“The owners will reject the offer to sell the car at first out of sentimental value and not the money. But I keep pestering them till they finally relent,” he says revealing the tricks of the trade.
His collection has swelled to 80 cars now. You name the model and the chances are that he would have it. Buick, Studebaker, Vauxhall, Benz, Austin, Morris Minor, Cadillac, Impala, Sunbeam, Rover etc to name a few. The oldest member is a Fiat of 1914 make, which he got from Karnataka.
Though these cars are in driving condition, Mr Jehangir does not take them on the road for fear of getting caught for not paying motor tax. He drives them in his compound. He has plans to begin an engineering amusement park with his collection.
