SGMP Racing

Under much cooler temperatures and a threat of rain, the afternoon was set for more full throttle racing as the ‘McDonalds Super Series’ got underway at South Georgia Motor Sports Park (SGMP) on Saturday June 30.

Emily Weldon, a young female driver from Hahira, Ga. presented her skills again as she weaved her way through a full field of Thunder and Lightning cars to take the checkered before a standing group of fans. Shane Weaver of Ray City, Ga., an obvious Dale Jr. fan brought his version of #8 in for a second place finish. Points leader, Shane Cornellius finished the 15 lap feature in third. Quickly becoming a crowd favorite, the Thunder and Lightning field seems to grow each week.

Jarred Bullard of Adel, Ga. in his Bullard Farms Pure Stock racing machine delivered a birthday win to engine builder Mike Laciura of Wildcat Engines also from Adel. In a close battle, last race winner Joey Webb of Lee, Fl. pulled off a second place finish while past winner, Josh Southerland of Adel took home the third place money after 20 laps.

In a quick Super Stock field, Randy Merwin of Valdosta, Ga. with a Tillman Racing ride that seemed on rails leading from green to checkered for the win. With a loaner from fellow a racer, Carl Black of Valdosta took the #37 normally driven by Patrick Giles to a second place finish. Bud Wilson of Tifton with a new entry finished third out of 20 laps.

Dirt Clip Late Model driver David Hodges Jr. of Valdosta ran away with the lead with the Charles Bennett sponsored car. Series point leader Mark Jones of Thomasville, Ga. held off advances to maintain a firm second place finish. Tom Jones from Barwick, Ga. with his Jones Automotive car completed the 25 lap feature in third.

Oval track racing resumes on Saturday July 14 when the star and cars of the McDonalds Super Series return to the asphalt.
