As Jari Matti Latvala found to his cost last time out in Poland, a special stage event cannot win the event, but it can certainly catch a driver out but it was Loeb who set the pace over the dirt-gravel stage in his Citroen C4 with a best time of 1:20.3s, a tenth of a second clear of team-mate Dani Sordo.

“At the moment everything is okay,” said the defending champion. “I hope for a good run for the end of the championship – there’s no tactics (this weekend) I just try and push.”
Hirvonen was third fastest in his Ford Focus, just nine-tenths shy of his title protagonist but like many in this opening stage, is taking the view that the rally ‘proper’ starts bright and early on Friday morning. Yahoo Eurosports
