Matthew Wilson Supports Motorsport Campaign In Wales Rally GB

Britain’s top rally driver, Matthew Wilson, is one of many drivers backing the Motor Sport Association’s Go Motorsport campaign on this weekend’s Wales Rally GB (4-7 December), the UK’s round of the FIA World Rally Championship. The 20-year-old star will be promoting the initiative by having official GoMotorsport.net stickers on his top flight Stobart VK M-Sport Ford World Rally Team entry.

Matthew is Britain’s only full time driver in the WRC and is the youngest ever driver to win a WRC stage and to score a world championship point. He is competing in this year’s series with co-driver, and fellow Cumbrian, Scott Martin. Matthew’s father, Malcolm Wilson, is one of many well-known Go Motorsport Ambassadors and the family are fully behind the campaign to attract new people into the sport.

“I’m delighted to be promoting Go Motorsport on this weekend’s Wales Rally GB,” confirmed Matthew. “My father’s one of many high profile ambassadors supporting what’s a great initiative from the MSA aimed at helping all sorts of newcomers to get involved not just in racing or rallying but also in lots of other equally exciting forms of motor sport. While competing in the World Rally Championship isn’t cheap, there are plenty of far more affordable ways for people to have fun on four wheels whether it’s as a competitor or volunteer. This Go Motorsport campaign will help them to become a part of what I believe is the most exciting sport in the world.”

The Go Motorsport campaign has been set up by the Motor Sports Association (MSA), governing body of motor sport in the UK, to help guide people into getting involved in motor sport, be it as a competitor, spectator or volunteer. The accompanying GoMotorsport.net website provides full details on how newcomers can compete in all the various disciplines, including less high-profile activities such as autotests and hillclimbs as well as circuit racing and rallying. It also includes information on the 5000 motor sport events taking place throughout the country every year and explains how enthusiasts can further their passion by becoming a marshal or official.

The focus of the motor sport world is set to be on Wales for the duration of the rally with some of motor sport’s top sports stars - including five-times World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb and six-times MotoGP Champion Valentino Rossi (who will be supporting the BBC Children in Need appeal) taking part in the high profile event.
