OMV, the leading oil and gas group in Central Europe, not only stands for success but also for innovations in rally sports. Following the introduction of the first natural gas-driven car, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI, in the Austrian Rally Championship in 2006, OMV also sets trends in international rallying. In cooperation with The CarbonNeutral Company all C02 emissions for the 2007 season in regard to the OMV Kronos Citroen WRT have been calculated, reduced where possible and remaining emissions have been “neutralised” through projects which save equivalent levels of CO2. As a result OMV Kronos Citroen World Rally Team is therefore the first CarbonNeutral® rally team worldwide.

Pilot project in the FIA World Rally Championship

For the first time this season OMV and their Kronos Citroen World Rally Team will compete CarbonNeutral®. Dr. Wolfgang Ruttenstorfer, OMV CEO: “We stand by our core business and our sponsoring strategy but we are nevertheless aware of our responsibility. Thus we have voluntarily taken up this quality assurance and are proud to support the first CO2 neutral rally team worldwide. ”

Innovations and simple calculations

Motor sports is also the source of technological innovations, e.g. lightweight construction, durability, energy efficiency and safety measures that are then consequently realised for mass production. In order to act as trend-setters in international rallying as well the following data was collected for the 2007 season of the OMV Kronos Citroen World Rally Team: the consumption of racing fuel for the Citroen Xsara WRCs, diesel for the trucks, petrol for the testing cars, amount of fuel for the rental cars, air miles and hotel accomodations of the whole team, non-recyclable expendable items, transits by third contractors as well as the work space of Kronos Racing. These data added up to a CO2 emission of 3,000 tonnes for the 2007 season. OMV purchased carbon offsets (known as “carbon credits”) for this CO2 amount for circa EUR 30.000. The carbon offsets projects are external regenerative energy and energy efficiency.

Official launch of CarbonNeutral status in Portugal

The official launch of OMV Kronos Citroen World Rally Team´s CarbonNeutral status will take place on Thursday, March 29, 2007 at 15.00 at the service park of the Rally de Portugal.
