A Wrap on a Long, Difficult Week

A Wrap on a Long, Difficult Week CIA Photo Stock Inc.

Odds and ends, bits and pieces, this and that as we put a wrap on a long, difficult week:

* I can’t wait for Saturday’s 25th annual Sprint All-Star Race, particularly the 10-lap shootout to determine the winner of the $1 million-plus first prize. The format has changed so many times over the last few years that it’s nice to see it return to its roots with the shootout – perhaps one of the most exciting elements in motorsports anywhere.

* I know I can be critical of NASCAR, but this time, I’m praising the sanctioning body for a heck of a good idea, and for some very good causes: NASCAR is auctioning off the chance for fans to ride around Lowe’s Motor Speedway with their favorite driver next Sunday during driver introductions prior to the Coca-Cola 600. All money raised goes to the NASCAR Foundation, Victory Junction Gang and Speedway Children’s Charities.

* Okay, nice-nice time is over. It’s back to criticism time: will Brian France or Mike Helton finally man-up and openly discuss all the facts in the lingering Jeremy Mayfield issue any time soon? The longer NASCAR’s top two officials keep their lips sealed, the more the sport’s credibility erodes even further.

* The All-Star Race was the favorite not only of the late Dale Earnhardt, but also of Charlotte Observer writer and Sirius NASCAR Radio personality David Poole, who passed away a little over two weeks ago. Poole long wrote volumes of heaping praise, but also took Sprint and NASCAR to task when the popular format was tinkered with one time too much. Now that we’re back pretty much to the best format option of all, somewhere I know Dale and David are looking down upon us with big smiles on their respective faces.

* On a more personal nature, please say a prayer some time today for a good friend of mine and one of the nicest guys in the sport, Dodge representative Denny Darnell, who will be undergoing triple-bypass surgery Friday morning in his native Kingsport, Tenn.

Catch you back here bright and early Monday morning.

Not racing related, but also please pray for the family of former OU All-American and NBA basketball great and jazz musician Wayman Tisdale, who passed at the young age of 44 this morning succumbing to his battle with cancer.

We will miss his wonderful smile and shining positive attitude.

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) - NASCAR chairman Brian France has classified Jeremy Mayfield’s positive test as “a serious violation” of the sport’s toughened drug policy.
France will not reveal what substance Mayfield was caught using in a random drug test May 1. NASCAR indefinitely suspended the driver last week after his backup “B” sample also tested positive.
Many drivers have called on NASCAR to disclose the drug, in part to clear up any confusion over what is banned under the policy.
But France says NASCAR sees no benefit in revealing the substance.

-Pleas take that in a joking manner.  :-)

Caught you here too Jerry !Let me try to explain here about Mayfield.one is that NASCAR has stood up like no other sport and will punish people that fail a drug test If you have ever taken a test you would know that no one gives a list of whats banned or what you can use Thats stupid !to even think that way, NASCAR will not punish you for over the counter medicine or perscriptions used properly.I applaud NASCAR on taking the stand where so many other sporting venues dont and harbor barroom fighters ,wife and girlfriend beaters killers, anti social demonic drugged up idiots.animal abusers. NASCAR will not release drugs involved for privacy reasons very understandable If Mayfield was innocent and it was cough medicine hed be yelling foul just like you and I would He is SILENT . all Nascar teams no matter what position has easy access to the people that can explain anything and everything to them .Ithink the people that are ‘YELLING’ at NASCAR are the same ones that everything NASCAR does there arm chair quarterbacking fat mouths have to open and try to put NASCAR down Its time we get them out of NASCAR also and if you like f1 irl local track racing or whatever you can enjoy NASCAR too like many of us if youre just here to knock us LEAVE Ifs its cocanie everyone will yeah great NASCAR ifs its pot they will Yell it should be legal let me crythats the people pushing well i guess thsts it except go get a list from your boss and when they send you on a suprise test ask if if you can wait until———-
