There’s East Coast Time, Miller Time and now we are once again staring Jimmie Time square in the face.
Last Sunday’s win at Dover was more than just Jimmie Johnson’s second win of the season. It was the perfect set-up for what Johnson does best: getting on a roll.
And as the Sprint Cup Series rolls into Pocono this week, Johnson couldn’t pick a better place to build upon what he began in Delaware. For it’s at Pocono’s 2.5-mile tri-oval that Johnson is typically at his best.
In 14 starts there, he has two wins, three additional top-5s and four other top-10s.
So, if you thought Johnson was washed up after three consecutive championships, forget it. The driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet is just getting warmed up.
But there’s a little twist to Johnson getting on yet another roll – and Dover set the stage for that. If you look at the some of the tracks following Pocono, Johnson has not enjoyed the kind of success that he’s had most other venues on the circuit.
Even though he’s amassed 42 wins in his career thus far, there are six tracks that Johnson has never won at yet – three of which come up in the five race dates after Pocono: Michigan (next week), Sonoma (week after) and Chicago in mid-July.
And Johnson has made it very clear that he wants to do the same exact thing his teammate, four-time Cup champ Jeff Gordon has done: to win at every track on the Cup schedule (Gordon still has yet to win at Homestead, but he’s won everywhere else).
What better way to kick off a run for a record fourth consecutive Sprint Cup title than to start at the places he has goose eggs up to now?
Have a good weekend, stay out of the rain and we’ll catch you back here on Monday.
