Nothing But Respect For Carl Long’s Determination to Get Back on Track

I love Carl Long’s chutzpah.
He’s still stuck paying a $200,000 fine for having an engine that was 0.17 inches oversized, and in a non-points paying race, but gosh darn it, Long is looking to become a David vs. Goliath story.
Long told the Daytona Beach News-Journal Wednesday that he hopes to race again in two months at Bristol Motor Speedway, when his current eight-race suspension from the sport is over.
Long told the newspaper that he’s working on a one-race deal with a corporate sponsor who would pay $300,000 to fly its company colors and logo on Long’s Dodge Charger, and pay off the $200,000 marker to NASCAR in the process.
That’s right, Long thinks he can get his car together – and with a legal-sized engine – to race in Bristol for $100 grand.
“I’m looking for one corporate sponsor to sponsor my car at Bristol,” Long told the paper in a telephone interview. “I know I can make the race. I have a ton of experience there.”
The paper noted that Long once won an All Pro Series sportsman class race at BMS, and that he’s qualified for the last six Sprint Cup races that he’s attempted there.
Wouldn’t it be one hell of a story if, somehow, Long not only finds a sponsor and qualifies for the race, but my some weird twist of fate, actually goes out and wins it?
I know, that’s one hell of a longshot dream. He’ll it’s more like the impossible dream, a true David vs. Goliath fantasy.
But stranger things have happened at Bristol. If there’s a huge multi-car wreck and Long avoids the carnage, his odds suddenly get a lot stronger.
And, if he gets help from some other teams in terms of parts or personnel, well … okay, I’m getting way too far ahead of myself.
By the way, Long has raised more than $19,000 in donations from fans looking to help him out. If you want to join that crowd and potentially be a part of his return at Bristol, check out Carl-Long.com.
He deserves your support, even it’s five bucks here or 10 bucks there. It all adds up.
