God, I love the Internet. Sure, it helps put money in my pocket, but the vast resources available on the Web never cease to amaze me.
I stumbled upon something today that I just had to share with you.
Click on the following link or copy it into your Web browser and you will be magically transported back in time nearly 50 years to the 1960 Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway:
http://www.fandome.com/video/78973/Largest-Crash-in-NASCAR-History/
While the audio is overdubbed and somewhat cheesy – it’s one of those old-time TV newsreels that were popular in the 1940s until the early 1960s – the action is dramatic.
But the best part of the nearly three minute, 30 second clip is the biggest “big one” crash in NASCAR history, long before the real “big one” even existed.
Can you believe 37 cars, out of a starting grid of 68 cars, involved in ONE major wreck? And virtually everyone walked away unscathed, save for eight drivers that suffered only minor injuries.
As I watched the action unfold in the massive Turn 4 wreck, I was immediately struck by what I have felt for years was the best crash scene I’ve ever seen: the bing-bang-boom wreck of dozens of police cars in the classic original version of “The Blues Brothers.”
But the 1960 Daytona 500 crash rivals that scene. And if it wasn’t such a serious incident in a serious race, you almost can’t be blamed if you started chuckling at some of the scenes – just like watching The Blues Brothers – as more than half of the field is taken out in one fell swoop.
No, it wasn’t a slow news day that prompted me to write this or bring the video to your attention. But if you’re like me, you occasionally like to be transported back in time and take a walk down memory lane. You can’t help but get all nostalgic and get that warm, fuzzy feeling.
Lastly, I believe in giving credit where it’s due. Kudos to Darren Pope of Columbia NASCAR Examiner (part of Examiner.com), as well as Jayski.com, for making my day with this video.
In turn, I hope I’ve made your day today with it, as well.
Catch ‘ya Wednesday.

I noticed things like:
No inside wall
Jeans, t-shirts, and tennis shoes the drivers had on
Cars that looked like, well cars.
That’s why I love to watch the old races on ESPN Classic.
