What better way to start the new week than with some observations about Sunday’s rescheduled race as well as thoughts about some of the drivers on the bubble to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
Let’s get started:
* The only thing worse than racing at Pocono Raceway is being rained out on race day and being forced to stick around yet another day to race on Monday. Let’s hope for good weather today, lest it becomes like the race at Michigan a couple years ago that didn’t take place until Tuesday due to rain.
* I can’t think of a more boring place to be stuck for an extra day than the area around Pocono – unless you put the heart-shaped bathtubs and whirlpools in some of the famous “honeymoon hotels” in the area to good use while waiting out the rain. But that’s a story for a different day, and probably for a different kind of Web site, isn’t it?
* Kudos to one of my favorite Web sites, Jayski.com, on its fantastic new redesign. Check it out if you get a chance.
* Kyle Busch’s outstanding start last season took a serious downturn starting with Watkins Glen, which is the next venue on the Sprint Cup schedule (this coming Sunday). Even though Busch is 14th in the standings coming into Monday’s rescheduled race, I wouldn’t worry. I still feel quite confident Busch will make the Chase this season, and despite the bad luck he’s had of late, I predict a major rebound and comeback from the driver of the No. 18 Toyota coming up, starting at either Michigan or Bristol. Mark my word.
* I can’t put my finger on why, but I just don’t have the same feeling about Jimmie Johnson in 2009 that I had in the previous three years, all which ended the same way: winning the Sprint Cup championship. Maybe it’s been the great season Tony Stewart has had, or the resurgence of Jeff Gordon, but I just don’t see Johnson winning four titles in a row.
* My pick thus far for the biggest surprise of this season is actually a three-way tie: Ryan Newman, Juan Pablo Montoya and David Reutimann. I’m pretty certain Newman and Montoya will make the Chase, but Reutimann is going to have to have some outstanding races in the next five – Pocono, Watkins Glen, Michigan, Bristol and Atlanta – to make the Chase.
Well, that’s it for the start to this week. Oh yeah, and my pick to win Monday is the same as it was Sunday: Tony Stewart.
Catch you back here on Tuesday.
